Can’t see the forest….

Sometimes the hardest thing to do is step out of our lives.  Staying immersed feels safer and being tethered to our routine eliminates the need to think!  And of course, there is the deeper delusion of staying so booked that we stay securely in one place - moving neither forward or back.

The same trickery that we apply to our lives also applies to art making.  Adjusting my course as an artist will improve my entire life.  Taking necessary time to think and assess where I am is a scary thing to do — but it is always worthwhile.

So I suggest stepping away from the studio occasionally.  Whether it is a day trip to a museum or a few days in a new city, ignore the routine.  Let some new ideas and images seep in without the commitment to make them productive.  Consider a new view.
