Outside the studio

I’m reminded how much I can learn about what I do when I’m not doing it.  Yesterday we visited studios in the Asheville River Arts District.  We went in all kinds of studios - pottery, glass, encaustic, painting.  Seeing their work spaces was fascinating and hearing artists, all kinds of artists, talk to clients was hugely interesting.  I saw the hard sell, the soft sell, the bored sell, and I got sold to once or twice :)  Most of all, I was reminded that there are as many ways to show work as to make it — each as individual as the artist.  Today I did internet research, something I don’t take time to do at home.  It takes time to pick through sites and find the useful stuff.  Definitely worthwhile though.  I guess studio time is about being SO in our own head that it can be too much of a good thing.  Stepping out helps.
