Chinatown Alley

I’m working on the first layers for a new encaustic. It’s based on a wonderful alley I discovered near Chinatown in New York. We were there a few weeks ago and this alley was fascinating —- shades of gray with fascinating textures and lines. Of course, I’m pushing the grays toward blues, greens, and reds. I know this first layer will become muted as I add layers of wax medium, so I’m being bold with my color.

Continuing, the photo of the alley is in the bottom corner here. Between the first photo and this one, I added a layer of clear medium and scraped it back before continuing. Another layer of clear medium is over this layer and I’ll continue until the wood isn’t visible before starting to develop some detail.

I’m excited about an addition to my encaustic space! My uncle found a drawing table at an estate sale for $10 (which I haven’t paid for yet….). Such a deal! I love this old table and it’s exactly the right size. I keep adding to my work space but this addition was really needed. I was going in the front room to my watercolor table to draw which is really okay - but it seemed to break my concentration to drag everything in there. Now I can pull my drawing over while I work then lay it safely back over on the table while I’m slinging wax.

And lastly, George says hello. Right after taking this photo, I found a cat claw stuck in his head!! George and Carm have evidently been “mixing it up” in the evening. They are polite during the day but at night, I think the sparks fly on a regular basis. Carm will never give up and George will never get smart enough to walk away.
